Legal

Copyright:
Copyright protects the physical expression of ideas this could be a piece of weighting, photograph music a film or website. It allows the creator of work to have full control over how their work is used. However there are many pieces of original work whereby the copyright has not been released and so its open to be used by anyone. If a piece of work that has been copyrighted used without permission it could lead to prosecution or a large fine.

In my documentary there were many aspects that links to copyright this includes
The music: the music in my documentary is created by an artists called Lady Gaga and I have not obtained consent form the artist to use their footage however because I am only creating my documentary for educational purposes I will not be broadcasting it on a public scale.

Archive footage obtained by you tube and made in Chelsea: in my documentary I have used clips from both made in Chelsea a well known television program on channel 4. and footage form you tube if a swishing event. When editing my documentary I have made a disclaimed that credits both souses.

Trespass
trespass is whereby an individual enters property without the owners permission for example if someone was to enter an abandoned building without permission to film they could be prosecuted as the owner of the land has not given permission.

Trespassing had quite a large impact on my documentary an this is because when I went to film at south side shopping centre I did not have permission and so was told I was not allowed to be on site with the camera. However I still managed to get the shop is needed for my cutaways. Due to not having formal consent I will not be broadcasting my documentary on a public scale.

Libel
Libel is whereby false writing, images, signs or pictures are released that could damage a persons reputation a good example of this would be a celebrity, if their was information released about David Beckham that was not true he this would fall under the libel law and he could take action against them.

The footage I had taken at the global action plan will only be to endorse swishing and I will not be saying anything negative that could damage there reputation.

Privacy
breaching of privacy includes filming people without there consent even if they are just passing by and get in the shot. Privacy is also breached when an individual is asked personal questions and its used on the final media production.

When filming the focus group at lavish habit (café) I did not obtain consent from the public who where in the background of my footage and therefore I will not be able to publicly showcase my documentary as this could result to complication if there people on the footage take action against the documentary.

Consent
when filming a documentary consent form each person that is going to be on the footage is crucial as if this is not done you could be taken to court and sued if someone decides they don’t want to be on the camera any more. A consent form will be signed by the person who is going to be filmed and will allows the creator to have full rights over the footage, it will state that they do no mind being used for the purpose.

When going filming my interviews and focus groups I had to ensure that I had got everyone who was going to be showcased to sign a a consent form stating that they did not mind being used and agreed for me to have full control over their footage however, because I did not have the content of passers by I will have to ensure that its not broadcaster publicly

Ethical

Ethical

Fair: Being fair means to not take sides and be biased but to have different opinions and not just on fixed view. Fair is also when a range of different ethnicity are used as well as ages and genders. If these aspects are not looked at it could result to people tacking offence or not finding the documentary appealing. In terms of being biased, this would not allow the audience to have the opportunity to decide for themselves what they believe is the right answer.

In my documentary I had to ensure that I was being fair. This is evident as I have used people from different ethnicity in my focus group and interviews also, people of different religions. Because I have a fixed target audience of young teenage females, it was important for me to ensure that the people who participated in my documentary where young adults/teens if I was to include males this would be going of topic and would take away the concept of the documentary.

Balanced: balanced means giving equal time and space to different opinions, it also means to treat people with respect in terms of what they wish to say, if some one has a negative view and another has a positive one should not be shown stronger as this would not be balanced and could result to conflict.

In my documentary I had to ensure that I had made it as balanced as possible and thankfully this was not much of a problem as my the topic I am covering does not have a negative side and is more of a investigation into the solutions people could take instead of buying new clothes. However it was important for me to make sure that when I put the documentary together that I I didn’t talk to much about why I thought the idea was good but left this more to my interviewees.

objective: objective is when a documentary maker influences what content is shown in the documentary for example if there was a documentary about students in a school and the producer only wanted to show positive aspects they would only film things that would make the school and pupils look good however the bad aspects would not be filmed.

In my documentary it was important that my opinions didn’t over power what the expects and interview had to say this is so that I was not being objective and letting people have their opinions as well as mine.

Non-manipulation through editing: A documentary editor could edit in a way to influence a message, for example if someone started a fight the documentary maker would not show the boy starting the flight but only the man reacting so it looks as if he is aggressive this can send false information to the viewer.

In my documentary it was crucial that I edited in a way that endorsed clothes swapping and the view of my interviews this is so that I did not give a negative impact on the topic. I also had to endure that all the people staring in my documentary where viewed as they where intended to e filmed and not edited for any other purpose.

6.2 DVD commentary script

In this evaluation I am going to be comparing Don't Shop Swap a fashion based documentary   and Sunday which is about the day of the week. I will be looking at the content, structure, codes and conventions, use of technology, style and Genre.

Don’t Shop Swap is about an alternative way to shopping and informs people about “swishing”, a new way for people to get clothes for free. The target audiences for this documentary are teenagers females aged between 16-19 who live in the urban environment and like to keep to date with current fashion trend, resulting to them having to go and buy new clothes constantly. In the documentary the target audience is evident as the actors are young females and style is appealing as its fast faced and content fit their lifestyles.
Sunday is about three Englishman’s point of view on the day Sunday, one of which who is negative and the other two who are positive. The target audiences for Sunday are middle-aged adult between 35-45 who live in the rural areas, this is because the documentary has a focus of three men who all live in villages in the countryside. The audience is evident as it includes subjects who are mature and look to be of old aged.

In comparison to one another Don’t Shop Swap and Sunday could not be any more different in content. This is clear to see as the target audiences are opposite; Don't Shop Swap is aimed at the younger generation, as the concept is relevant to their lifestyles. Sunday on the other hand is aimed at middle aged adult this because they would find the topic interesting as it’s about people who are of the same age and live in the same location.

The structure of my documentary consists of an opening sequence, the audience is then shown achieve footage of a clip taken from made in Chelsea, followed by cutaways of the website closet swap with a voice over narrative explaining. This then leads up to the interview at the global action plan swishing event. Following on from global action plan is the focus group of a group of friends meeting up deciding to start their own swishing event. The focus group has a voice over narrative. The end concludes with more achieve footage of a swishing event and still images over a voice-over.

Sunday is only made up of three interviews they are edited alternately to show contrasting opinions. The documentary begins with a title sequence which then leads into the first interview; we then see another interview followed by more relevant cutaways. This is repeated thorough out the documentary however at the end we see credits rolling over concluding footage of ballroom dancing.

Sunday and Don't Shop Swap have very different structure, Sunday is very basic. The pace of elements can also be very slow and this may not interest younger viewers. On the other hand Don't Shop Swap is fast paced it has attractive music that entices the viewer to want to continue on watching this relates well with the target audience structure of Don’t Shop Swap has more structural elements of a documentary as opposed to Sunday.

Codes and Conventions:
In my documentary there are many codes and conventions. I have used archive footage of a made in Chelsea and swishing event clip this is it has relevance to my documentary and also because many young people can relate to it. I have used many cutaways so that the viewer’s don't lose interest and want to watch on. A voice over, this is used so that the viewer is able to understand what is going on. There are a couple of interviews of both an expert and a young people to add more depth to my documentary. A focus group with a narrative was one of my conventions as it adds more bulk to the topic and allows the target audience to relate more to the situation, title sequence at the opening of the documentary is used and this is to tell people what the documentary is about. Finally I have used music to add more interest as it works well with the target audience. The reason why I had chosen to use all these cutaways is because they make up my.

In the Sunday the codes and conventions consists a titles sequence followed by three interviews of English men in alternative orders. Other conventions used in Sunday are sound bites that are overlaid with cutaways these are of relevance to what is being talked about however at times can also be the opposite, for example when man is talking about Sunday in a negative way the audience are seeing footage of ballroom dancing.

In comparison both documentaries have very much in common as they both include interviews, cutaways and a title sequences however, my documentary consists of more conventions. There is a convention that I have not used in my documentary, a piece to camera because I didn’t think it would be necessary to be seen as it would not have impacted on the final outcome. I used a voice over narrative throughout documentary which worked perfectly well as it was engaging and form my audience feedback everyone found that it enticing and easy to understand.

The technology I had used to film Don’t Shop Swap was a HD portable camera which was great as it was high quality and looked good however the sound quality was not great and so I had to add a microphone. Trio-pod which was used to film all of my footage and dolly tri-pod I used this when going to film at the swishing event. When editing the footage I used an Apple Mac to create the final documentary on software called final cut express. I also used live-type to create title; iMovie’s to edit certain clips and garage bad to edit the music.

Because Sunday is a professional documentary the camera quality is a lot higher, this is as there is more of a budget to top of the range equipment. A boom microphone must have been used this is also evident as the sound quality is also very high. From the way in which the editing has been done the software also look more advanced and so the overall look is astatically pleasing.

Both documentaries are very different yet similar as they both use the same equipment. My documentary was made on a low budget and therefore it was not possible for me to be able to use an expensive quality camera or boom microphone. If I had more money to spend on equipment the documentary would ultimately have looked more professional.

The Mode of Don't Shop Swap is investigative, yet I have managed to present the documentary in an informal and engaging way. The stages of the documentary make the viewer want to watch on as they are learning something new thought out. By the end of the documentary the viewer is able to gain knowledge about clothes swapping. The overall presentation links well with the target audience as I have used current music and locations.

Sunday style is observational this is evident the audiences are looking at three people opinions. The overall style is would be pleasing to the target audience as it’s all about an aspect of sociality. The location and content connotes that its bee formed for people in the country. After watching the audience are left to reflect on how they spend their Sundays and whether they thing the stereotype is a positive aspect to the way in which we live.

In comparison both documentaries are different in styles, Don’t Shop Swap is investigative and Sunday is Observational however, there are similarities as they are both informal and touch upon people and their lifestyles.

Genre:
Don’t Shop Swap is very different from most other fashion documentaries that are on broadcasted on television as it is created by a teenager for teenagers and is created solely to educate and inform people about ‘Swishing’ the fashion solution that could change their way of thinking about the world as it would get them to consider swapping clothes which would help the environment in many different ways. The topic is also a very current as it’s an aspect of society, times are hard and there is not much money and jobs for young people. This documentary is allowing them to find a fix to this problem.

Sunday is also very different from what’s currently broadcasted on televisions as it is looks at how people in the country spend their Sundays. There are no current documentaries that look at days of the week so this makes Sunday unique from others.

In comparison to one another Don’t Shop Swap and Sunday both are uncovering an area of society. They both have factors that make them unique from what’s currently out in the market and would have a great chance in being broadcasted however; Sunday may struggle as there would not be much of an audience in the city.

6.4 evaluate how successfully you achieved your intentions

Suitability for Intended Target Audience:
The intended target audiences for my documentary are teenage females aged between 16-19 who are into fashion and are fashion conscious. There are many ways in which my documentary would appeal to teenage females one of which would be the mode of address as its informal this is evident as the pace of the documentary is quick and the voice over is enthusiastic and engaging. The cutaways are fast paced and relevant however, the opening title sequence could have been improved if I had more time to make it appealing and professional as currently the simple font and dull colour is boring. Another appealing aspect of my documentary is the focus group as the actors used are teenage females of mixed ethnicity.

This would make the target audience more able to reflect themselves in the situation regardless of their colour. Because the sound quality was not great it was not possible to have dialogue, this has an impact, as teenagers would want to hear what was going on. The feedback I had received from the audience also said that the sound levels of the focus group are of poor quality and therefore I had to remove it. The music used in the documentary relates very well with not only the target audience but also the subject. I had chosen to use Lady Gaga Fashion as its current and fits hand in hand with what I am trying to achieve. Its fast paced and when watching, the music also plays a strong impact on hooking people and making then want to watch.  There are no downsides to the music and from the feedback given, people had said that it was a great choice because it’s current and relevant. It also reinforces the message and subject of my documentary. The archive footage of made in Chelsea is appealing because television programmes inspire many young females. This would encourage them to want to make a difference themselves. However the quality of the footage is not great and so it can be difficult to see. In the documentary the shots are of the website this allows the viewer to see what I am talking about in the voice over. This is important, as it would demonstrate what they themselves would have to do.

Technical Qualities
In my documentary the lighting in most of the shots are of good quality, when filming in the shopping centre the artificial lighting was an extra bonus and as well as the natural. This made the documentary look a lot more professional as the quality of the footage is high. A weakness is that the lighting in some of the shots I.e. the focus group has good lighting however the sunlight is very strong and so there are shadows making it difficult to see things in some of the footage. The audience feedback I received is that the lighting was of good quality as the footage looked professional and clear. When going to film the first focus in café Nero the location was badly lit and so it was difficult to see what was being filmed. When filming the microphone was also in shot and so it didn’t look as professional as it could have. On the cannon camera the footage seemed to have been at a reasonable quality however, when loading it onto the Mac the footage became very pixilated and difficult to see the overall footage then became pointless to use as it was of bad quality and so I had to reshoot the footage.

The framing in the cutaways of the shop signs are well positioned and the use of panning for the cutaway at the swishing event made the overall look of the documentary more professional as the footage had a smooth glide to it. However at times the interview is not very well shot this can be seen as Rachel's is on the wrong side of the screen. The wire framing on final cut allowed me to improve this as I was able to stretch out the shot. When presenting my documentary to the rest of the class the response I received was that they found what she was saying relevant and good however the quality of the footage looked a little pixilated, this effected the quality of the clip and would have looked much better if id managed my time better.

The non-digetic voice over in the documentary is enthusiastic and engaging this encourages more views, as people would be intrigued to wanting to see what the documentary is about. At the introduction the quality of the sound was high and so hooked people. This is effective as it makes people want to watch to see what the documentary is about. At times the sound quality of the voice over is not great this is due to interferences when recording, as it was difficult to find a quite space. The quality therefore in some of the voice over is affected due to volume levels. From the introduction to the archive footage the voiceover changes dramatically as the sound levels go down and it becomes harder to hear what is being talked about. The audience research proved that my voiceovers where effective as they wanted to watch on as it was engaging however they found that at times it the sound levels go up and down and this gives them a negative impact. And effects the professional quality look.
The editing process of my documentary allowed me to ensure link my clips together the overall

Aesthetics
The choice of location and Mise en scene was important for the overall aesthetic quality of my work. The location shooting for the focus group fitted perfectly with the topic and target audience this is as it’s a fashion/café shop. This relates with the topic, as there are clothes in the café also made the shot look attractive. However because it was a small space it was difficult to get a full establishing shot. On the day of filming this shot the weather worked to be an advantage as it was sunny and so I didn’t have an issue with the lighting. In my audience feedback the response I received was that the location of the shot was great as it links well with the documentary as well as the target audience. Another location that worked in my favor is Southside shopping centre as all of the shops I required were under one roof. This made it easy for me to shoot as it illustrated the message of my documentary. The lighting and all other aspects including passers by were all the result to well shot cutaways.

The title I have used to introduce my documentary is very basic and bland however it’s clear and easy to read. The title give the first impression of what people think of the documentary and so if I had more time to improve this aspect I would have made it a lot more attractive. My audience feedback also found the tiles I used very unattractive and boring. If I were to improve this next time I would ensure that I use after effects to create a more vibrant and catchy title that fits well with my target audience. I would use bright colors and make the text 3D
